How this test works
A quick look at what the test did behind the scenes, in plain language.
Your eyes see color with three types of cells
The back of your eye has three types of cone cells. One responds most to red light, one to green, and one to blue. Every color you can see is a mix of signals from those three.
The curves in this diagram overlap on purpose. Real cones overlap the same way, and your brain reads color from the difference between their signals, not from any single cone alone.
Color blindness usually means one cone type is weaker or shifted toward a neighbor. Certain colors then send almost the same signal to the brain, so they become hard to tell apart.
The test challenges one channel at a time
Each round shows patterns that only one cone type can solve. The test keeps lowering the contrast, like climbing the steps in this diagram, until you start missing them.
How far you climb on each channel becomes that channel's score out of 100. A channel that stops early needed stronger color differences than the other two.
If one score drops clearly below the rest, that gap is the pattern this screening reports as protan, deutan, or tritan.
How scoring works
This test estimates red, green, and blue channel performance on your screen, then looks at which channel is weakest.
Step 1
You answer along three color channels
The test adapts contrast along red (L), green (M), and blue (S) confusion lines. As you answer, it makes each channel harder until mistakes start to rise.
Step 2
Each channel gets a score from 0 to 100
Higher scores mean you kept answering correctly as contrast got harder. Lower scores mean that channel lost reliability sooner on this display.
Step 3
Quick and Detailed modes differ in fine steps
Quick mode uses fewer contrast levels for a fast screen. Detailed mode uses finer steps and is usually steadier when a score sits near a boundary.
Step 4
The result type follows the lowest channel
If all three stay high and even, the pattern looks typical. If one channel is clearly lowest, the tool labels a protan (red), deutan (green), or tritan (blue) screening pattern. Mixed or near-tied scores can come back inconclusive.
What each classification means
Normal color vision
All three channels stay in a typical range on this run. Everyday color tasks usually feel easy, though display quality still matters online.
Protan deficiency
The red channel scored clearly lower. That pattern is associated with protanopia or protanomaly on clinical tests, but this screen cannot separate complete from partial forms.
Deutan deficiency
The green channel scored clearly lower. That pattern is associated with deuteranopia or deuteranomaly. It is the most common inherited red-green form.
Tritan deficiency
The blue channel scored clearly lower. Tritan patterns are less common. Confirm unexpected blue-yellow difficulty with a professional exam.
Inconclusive pattern
Scores did not meet rules for a clear normal or deficiency type. Borderline values, filters, or inconsistent answers are common causes. Retake or compare with another tool.
Severity bands
When a deficiency type is suggested, severity uses the affected channel score roughly as: mild about 60 to 89, moderate about 30 to 59, and strong under 30 out of 100. These bands are for awareness on this tool only.
What can change your score
Online color tests run on everyday phones and monitors. These limits apply to every result on this site. Blue scores are especially sensitive to screen warmth and night filters, so retake carefully before treating a low blue result as settled.
Your screen is not a clinic display
Brightness, color temperature, Night Shift, True Tone, and browser color handling all change what you see. The same person can score differently on two devices.
Room light and glare matter
A bright window, dim room, or reflections on a glossy screen can hide or exaggerate colors. Steady indoor light and full brightness give the fairest retake.
Glasses and filters can shift results
Tinted lenses, blue-light filters, and accessibility color filters can move scores without reflecting a lasting vision change. Retake without them when you want a cleaner check.
